Sonic Babe Of The Month - November 2006

What made you get into Rock N' Roll?

It got into me!!! …I listened to what my mom listened to- classic rock. Bands like Bryan Adams, The Guess Who, Elton John… etc. I had been studying classical piano with The Royal Conservatory of Music since I was about five years old, and I had started writing my own songs at the age of 13. I started working with a singer/songwriter friend of mine who gigged regularly around Vancouver. He came over every week and we worked on music together. Over time, I was introduced to a lot of amazing musicians who helped me with my writing and recording, and each of them turned me onto different classic rock bands. That’s how I got into this particular genre- I was just immersed in it.

What was your first rock concert and what was the experience like for you?

First rock concert was Bryan Adams… at which I was pulled up onstage to perform a duet with him. I was sitting near the front in the center with my mom… and he needed a female to get up onstage to sing “When You’re Gone” with him. I put my hand up, thinking, ‘he’d never pick me’. Then, all of a sudden, he’s pointing at me and motioning for me to get up there… it was the most surreal feeling I’d ever experienced! Everything went dark… and before I knew it he was pulling me up on stage by the hand. It was a BLAST- he asked me a few questions, we played the song and then he sent me backstage to get t-shirts!!

Completely freak thing…but it ended up being the main ‘event’ that broke me in the local scene. I made a lot of press because of it, and that led to meeting more people within the music industry.

What is your five all time favorite albums (CDs)?

Oh man… five is such a small number!
• Appetite For Destruction –Guns N Roses
• Skid Row –Skid Row
• Slippery When Wet –Bon Jovi
• The Best Of The Guess Who (1971) –The Guess Who
• Youthanasia –Megadeth

Who are your five favorite bands?

Guns N Roses, The Guess Who, Skid Row, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith… there are SO many more hahhaa!

What is your all time favorite song and why?

Tough questions!!! …ummm… one I got really attached to is “Don’t Cry” by Guns N Roses.

Do you play an instrument? If so, what & how long? Also are you in a band, who is it?

Yes, I play keys (for 15 years now), guitar (about five years), bass (for a couple years) and I played the flute for about 3 years in the highschool band. I have a band that plays with me for most gigs… I have some guys in LA and some guys in Vancouver.

If your can go back in time, who would you like to seen perform live & why?

I would say Aerosmith, BUT I am going to see them!! So I will say Led Zeppelin… and also The Doors. Im so sad that I missed out on those times!

If you could put the ultimate rock show together with three bands, who would it be?

Hmmmm… Guns N Roses, Aerosmith and Bon Jovi!

Do you think there's any bands out today can make rock n' roll big in the mainstream again?

Ummmm… I really like Hinder’s song “Lips Of An Angel”…

Also there are some really cool bands on Myspace that are really doing some cool new stuff… so get on there and check out independent bands!

I play with some guys in LA who play in some kick-ass bands: My drummer Pauly plays in Elegantly Wasted- they have a GREAT sound and their songs are amazing. (www.myspace.com/elegantlywasted)

My guitarist Todd plays in Ekphrasis –a progressive rock band in LA. They are unlike anything you will ever hear. (www.myspace.com/ekphrasis)

What do you think rock n roll is missing today?

Innovative attitudes- creativity… musicians daring enough to venture into new territory. We need to be unafraid to disregard the typical “must get signed” attitude.

What is your definition rock n' roll?

Rock: Mineral matter of variable composition, consolidated or unconsolidated, assembled in masses or considerable quantities in nature, as by the action of heat or water.

Roll: To move along a surface by revolving or turning over and over, as a ball or a wheel. OR… to express yourself by making loud noise with whatever you can find! I think as long as you are having fun, it’s rock n roll baby!!!!

What is your choice of poison (drink) while enjoying rock n' roll?

Bacardi Black rum and Coke!

Any last words or thoughts about rock n roll?

It’s really important to protect your ears by wearing earplugs to concerts! …and beware of flying cups and bottles when you’re watching the show from the lower levels!
