Sonic
Babe Of The Month - June 2006
Name: Rabs
From: Baltimore, Maryland
What made you get into Rock N' Roll?
Well, ya know, I think it was just always in me, not just rock
'n roll, but all good music. If it's got substance to it and it
makes me feel, then I'm totally into it. But I grew up on rock
'n roll music, and I've loved it ever since! From as far back as
I can remember I was listening to the Beatles, the Rolling Stones,
the Cars, and loads of old school rock like Chuck Berry and Buddy
Holly and the Contours and Elvis, as well as old school shit like
the Shangri-La's, the Shirelles, Fats Domino, Chubby Checker, etc...
I really got into it when I was super little, it quickly grew on
me- it's my life now! I really don't know what I'd do without it.
What was your
first rock concert and what was the experience like for you?
Oh man... I'm trying to remember who I saw at my very first
show- I was pretty fucking little. I know it was at this club
called "Valentine's" in Albany, NY- where I used to
live. I honestly can't remember the band- it was some obscure
underground band- but what I do remember is that feeling- that
live show feeling. It just gets your heart pumping and you don't
want it to end! There's nothing, I mean NOTHING like a live show-
the energy is just overwhelming.
What is your five all time
favorite albums (CDs)?
Shit... It's really fuckin hard to narrow it down to just five.
You're killin me here! Let's make a deal- I'll give you 8, we'll
compromise. wonderful. ha.
Dead Boys- "Young, Loud, and Snotty"
Danzig- "Danzig" (self titled)
The Ramones- "All the Stuff and More, Vol. 1 and 2"
The Clash- "The Clash" (self titled)
Guns n Roses- "Appetite for Destruction"
X- "The Best of X"
The Misfits- "Collection 1"
T-Rex- "The Slider"
Who are your five favorite bands?
Well, the previous question kind of explained it since my favorite
albums are by some of my favorite bands, but I'll add some more
I guess- and of course, once again, it can't be condensed to
just 5, sorry, I love too much MUSIC!
AC/DC
Queen
Lords of the New Church
The Briefs
Toilet Boys
Hanoi Rocks
Iggy and the Stooges
blah blah blah... the list could go on and on and on...
What is your all time favorite song and why?
I'm going to have to say it's "Crimson and Clover"-
the Joan Jett version. Something about that song makes me feel,
well, alot of things. It's just fan-fucking-tastic.
Do you play
an instrument? If so, what & how long? Also are
you in a band, who is it?
Yeah, I play bass. I've been playing for a while now- I played
for this band HIJINX out of Albany, NY- kick ass band- we had
a great time. I ended up playing for them because we were all
friends and I would load all their shit in my Jeep and drive
with them to shows, you know, play merch-bitch and help 'em out
all the time... then their bass player just quit out of the blue
and I said, "Hey guess what? I'm going to fucking play bass" and
of course everyone kind of chuckled and didn't think anything
of it because I had never played bass before, but within a week
I had learned and was playing my first show with them within
2 weeks. So I earned my keep and played with them until I made
the choice to move to Baltimore, and the long distance thing
just wouldn't cut it, but they're still a band now with a new
bass player and they still rock fucking harder than hell- check
'em out!
If
you can go back in time, who would you like to have seen perform
live?
Ah it's funny you ask this! I think and talk about this exact
question all the time- I think my friends are sick of hearing
about it- haha. I'd say either the Dead Boys because Stiv Bators
was a sassy motherfucker and I would have loved to fuel his snotty
antics, or maybe the Ramones just because Joey's voice was fucking
lovely and I think I would probably explode if I heard it live
back in the 77 days.
If you could put the ultimate
rock show together with three bands, who would it be?
Hmm... ULTIMATE would be T-Rex, Dead Boys, and Black Flag...
just because I would want to see what sort of raging chaos would
break out with that mix. It would be interesting, don't you agree?
Do you think there's any bands
out today can make rock n' roll big in the mainstream again?
Well I don't know if bringing it back to the "mainstream" is
a great idea or even possible because most people today are lame-o
and they totally don't appreciate good rock'n roll, but here's
some bands that everyone should get an earful of. They're all good
friends of mine and they're real rock 'n roll- each band embodies
the greatest sounds of rock 'n roll without imitating or copying
it. They're all amazing musicians who know good music when they
hear it and make great music themselves. Do yourself a favor and
check 'em out.
HIJINX
THE HOUNDS OF HELL
THE BLACK HALOS
THE EROTICS
BLASE DEBRIS
SEX SLAVES
What do you think rock n' roll is missing today?
I think it's the fact that people aren't as willing to
just go rock out and have fun- alot of people go to shows
for shitty reasons, like fashion or the coolness factor
or whatever it may be, when people should be into the music
and really rock out and support the music, ya know? I think
rock n roll is missing the real rock n rollers- I'm not
saying there isn't any left because I personally know a
bunch of kickass people who are really into rock n roll
for all the right reasons, but I can tell ya there should
be a whole shitload more of them!!
What is your definition rock n' roll?
Great music. Fucking amazingly great music... good times, fast
times, booze, drugs, non-stop fun, complete inhibition- anything
goes as long as it rocks.
What is your choice of poison (drink)
while enjoying rock n' roll?
I'm partial to whiskey on the rocks or gin on the rocks, with
a shot or twelve of tequila... ha. no, really, I'm serious. They
don't call me the Tequila-demon for nothing. Rabs gets seriously
Tequilintoxicated, and it's highly entertaining.
Any last words or thoughts about rock n roll?
I'll just raise my glass and down the shot- cheers, rock n roll.
