Sonic
Babe Of The Month - August 2006
Name: CJ Sleez
From: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
What made you get into Rock N' Roll?
I’ve always been outgoing and rebellious. Rock N’ Roll
has provided me with the perfect outlet for my untamed creative
energy. Truthfully, I’ve never even considered doing anything
else. Music is in my blood. I come from a family of musicians and
have never had a lesson in my life. It just comes naturally to
me. It’s what I’m here to do and it’s great having
such a secure sense of purpose. Focused energy is so much more
powerful than dispersed energy. Despite all the hard work and sacrifices,
being a rockstar is still the best job in the world!
What was your
first rock concert and what was the experience like for you?
I can’t remember the first show that I ever went to see.
It seems like I’ve been watching and listening to bands
my entire life. I guess there’s a lot of things I don’t
remember at this point. I don’t usually think about the
past, why dwell on things that have already happened anyway?
Really my only concern is what I’m going to do next.
What is your five all time
favorite albums (CDs)?
There’s too many to choose just 5. Here’s a bunch
of my favorite bands + albums:
Guns n’ Roses – Appetite
for Destruction
Motley Crue – Shout at the Devil
Nine Inch Nails – The Downward Spiral
Hole – Live Through This
Alice Cooper – Billion Dollar Babies
The Sex Pistols – Anarchy in the UK
The New York Dolls – Too Much Too Soon
KISS – Destroyer
L7 – Bricks are Heavy
The Dead Kennedy’s – Bedtime for Democracy
Faith No More – The Real Thing
Tool - Undertow
Who are your five favorite bands?
Again, I don’t think I can narrow it down to just one.
That’s like asking a fish what their favorite drop of water
is in the ocean.
What is your all time favorite song and why?
Janis Joplin songs. I grew up listening to her. My mother sang
her songs to me as lullabies when I was a baby.
Do you play
an instrument? If so, what & how long? Also are
you in a band, who is it?
I play electric guitar, and although it’s not really my
driving passion, it is my favorite instrument. I prefer to sing
and I’ve always thought that lead singers who also play
guitar live are boring to watch. I like to feel free on stage
and having a guitar strapped to me feels like dead weight. I
think it’s better to concentrate on doing one thing at
a time and doing it well. Usually the only time I play is when
I’m at home writing new songs.
If you could put the ultimate
rock show together with three bands, who would it be?
CJ SLEEZ (my band of course), also Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson.
Do you think there's any bands
out today can make rock n' roll big in the mainstream again?
Well
my band of course… There are so many deadly new rock
bands out there these days. It’s definitely time for a turn-around
in mainstream musical culture. People are bound to get sick of
this Rap/R+B crap sooner than later. It seems like Rock has a resurgence
every 10 years or so, and we’re due for another one. I also
think that the Toronto Music Scene is ready for its day in the
sun. There’s so much cool stuff happening here lately. It
could very easily be center of the next major movement, (like Seattle,
L.A, and New York have been in the past.) Rock n’ Roll will
never die Baby! Not as long as there are wild ones like me dedicated
to keeping it alive and in-your-face.
What is your definition rock n' roll?
Loud, Fast, Expressive, Inspirational and Emotion Music. Real
Rock n’ Roll should make your body move instinctively.
Honesty, Danger and Raw Emotion. There are too many bands out
there posing and trying to fit into the watered-down, cookie-cutter
ideal of what they think modern rockstars should be. It’s
like they’re afraid of pissing of the major labels or something.
The music industry has become so corporate that it’s sickening.
Bands want to be marketable, accessible to the mainstream, politically
correct and safe, even at the expense of their artistic integrity.
Not enough artists are taking risks which is what I believe Rock
n’ Roll is all about. It’s about being young, shocking,
and controversial, and it’s about pushing society’s
envelope. I’m more concerned about expressing my true self
and presenting a REAL account of my lifestyle and experiences,
than I am with selling records. I refuse to compromise or dull
down my work just to make it more palatable for the public majority.
The truth is something that should always be heard, whether people
think they want to hear it or not. It’s the only thing
that really counts in the log-run; The only thing that’s
remembered.
What is your choice of poison (drink)
while enjoying rock n' roll?
I used to go crazy for shots of Tequila Gold, fat lines of coke
and needles full of heroin while out at the clubs, (in fact I
drank and snorted so much, so fast that it ended up giving me
an ulcer among other things), but for the past couple of years
I’ve been heavily and legally medicated. I take five separate
kinds of pills every day plus my methadone (which alcohol tends
to dull the effectiveness of), so I’ve had to curb my heavy
drinking somewhat. I am however a total chronic when it comes
to weed and don’t plan on giving up that habit anytime
soon.
Any last words or thoughts about rock n roll?
It’s primal. Support your local Hard Rock Bands and Always
